Health & Safety

First Rung has a good track record of maintaining a safe and healthy work environment not only at our own premises but also at those of our employers.

Health & Safety - first Aid

We try to ensure that learning takes place in a safe, healthy and supportive environment through our Health and Safety management system, risk assessment processes and our Health and Safety-focussed culture of participation.

We have in place an annual Health and Safety action plan which is drawn from our annual Health and Safety audit report. This is how we measure our performance. We have a strong commitment from the Board of Trustees where Health and Safety issues are discussed regularly and policies and procedures reviewed annually.

Health and Safety forms an integral part of our learner and staff induction programme. Monitoring and evaluation of learners’ understanding is carried out at regular intervals through the review and subsequent training sessions.

Placements are regularly visited by staff all of whom hold the IOSH Working Safely award and placement development officers assess the suitability of new placements and hold the IOSH Managing Safely award. All prospective placements are assessed for their suitability and are required to sign an ‘Employers Agreement’ which includes Health and Safety requirements before we can enter into any agreement with them. Employers receive a comprehensive ‘Employers’ Handbook’ which includes guidance on Health and Safety. HSG 245 paperwork is used for investigating accidents and is industry recognised model.
