Work Experience

What is Work Experience?

Many (not all) of our programmes offer an opportunity to get training and experience in a real working environment with an employer who wants to help you gain confidence and learn new skills. This is a good opportunity to show a prospective employer your abilities.

You will work alongside their staff, doing real work, and be treated as part of the team. You will be told what you are expected to do at your placement induction. Don’t worry if you are asked to do some things that you have never done before, as you will be given as much training as you need.

We will make sure that we choose a work placement for you that is most suited to your individual needs. It will be somewhere where you will be happy and you will be treated fairly.

When you are on placement you will be visited by First Rung staff to discuss how you are progressing, support your individual needs and liaise with your placement supervisor. Click here to read some of our success stories

If you are unsure or unhappy about anything then talk to your supervisor/manager. If you do not feel comfortable talking to them, then talk to the member of First Rung staff who visits you or the Centre Supervisor/Learner Support.

Your work placement will provide you with a reference when you apply for employment, so remember to treat everybody you come into contact respectfully and always do your best.  Many of our learners are offered paid employment while they are on their learning programme.
