Apprenticeship Standard: Teaching Assistant

The Level 3 Teaching Assistant programme is ideal for anyone already working in, or looking for a career in a teaching support role.

Teaching Assistants work in Primary, Special and Secondary education across all age ranges encompassing special educational needs and emotional vulnerabilities. The primary role of the Teaching Assistant is to support the class teacher to enhance pupils’ learning either in groups or individually.

Entry Requirements

· GCSEs in English and maths at Grade 4/C or above or able to achieve Functional Skills Level 2 English /maths whilst on the programme

· To be able to gain a satisfactory Date Barring Service (DBS)

What will I study?

Learners will build an advanced understanding of how to provide quality teaching and how to influence and support learners. Some of the areas of development include:

  • Contributing to the implementation of learning activities

  • Support, understand and promote children's learning and development

  • Working independently in teaching group and individual activities

  • Working in partnership with teachers to help support and deliver lesson plans and objectives

  • Be a good role model for pupils

  • Safeguard and promote the health, safety and welfare of children

  • Paediatric First Aid

Candidates who successfully achieve their standards can progress into a variety of settings, such as:
