About Apprenticeships

An apprenticeship is a programme that offers the opportunity to attain nationally recognised skills and occupational standards while working in paid employment.

First Rung aims to equip candidates with the knowledge, skills and behaviours to develop and progress in their careers. It also seeks to meet the training and staffing needs of local employers.

An Apprenticeship includes:

  • Paid employment with holiday leave

  • Hands-on-experience in a sector/role of interest

  • At least 20% off-the-job training – this would involve you coming into the centre one day a week

  • Maths and English Functional Skills to Level 2, if you do not have GCSEs at Grade 4

  • Training and employment which develop knowledge, skills and behaviours to perform your role

  • End Point Assessment confirming and evidencing competency in nationally recognised vocational standards

Who can apply?

An apprenticeship is a great paid work opportunity for people over the age of 16 in England who are:

  • At the beginning of their career

  • Looking to upskill in their current job

  • Looking for a career change

  • Not in full-time education * You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school but you’ll need to be 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays to start the apprenticeship.
